The Cleanest City in Northeast India – Gangtok

Each and everywhere of our country, we always speak about the cleanness but every time we are not successes. For make a clean India our prime minister announced the Swacha Bharat Mission but Himalayan state Sikkim already started it few years ago of this announcement. It can be the Inspirational example for all over country.

Especially the glorious example is Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim state, has been awarded as the ‘Cleanest tourist Destination’ by the Ministry of Tourism of India. The award was handed over the honourable Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra D. Modi to the Commissioner, Gangtok MC, in New Delhi on September 30.  It is a great success of the state tourism Department.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation nodal Ministries of India responsible for execute the flagship programme Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a day-long national workshop ‘INDOSAN’ at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

Chief Ministers of many states and ministers in-charge of the Swachh Bharat Mission and other delegates were attend the workshop.

The Sikkim delegation was led by Minister, UD and HD, NK Subba, Mayor GMC, PCE/Secretary – UD and HD, Municipal Commissioner, State Mission Directors (Urban and Gramin), Officials and Panchayats, ADCs-Development Namchi and Gyalshing.

The award was handed over the honourable Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra D. Modi to the Commissioner of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, in New Delhi on September 30. It is a great success of the state tourism Department.

“Now, we are at number 8, last year we were at 16th position; we plan to reach the top slot next year. To accomplish that we are planning to ban Styrofoam through pollution control department. Secondly, we are planning for zero waste initiative where the garbage will either be recycled or dumped at the ward itself,” said Sakti Singh, Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation

“There will be no water-borne diseases and the breeding of mosquitoes will be under check. This is the major reason why we are working on this. Also, plastic is banned in Sikkim, the government brought the notification in this regard and we are working for its implementation. Sikkim got the cleanest hill station award from our honourable Prime Minister. A lot of tourists are also coming here due to this,” said C.P. Dhakal, Chairman, Gangtok Municipal Corporation.

It was a great challenge for the state tourism Department and GMC to achieve the title of “Cleanest City” in north east in India. Though, they did it with the support of the citizens.

 100 of cities were selected from all over the country, after the shortlisted Gangtok take the position in top 10 in India. Then it honoured with the title of “cleanest tourist destination”.  Gangtok is only city from northeast India, which takes the position in top ten cities. Mysore, Thirchirapalli, Navi Mumbai, Korchi, Hassan, Mandya, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, &  Hali sahar are another nine cities of top ten.
